Crooked Still does it; Nightingale does it; Heck, even Charles Mingus does it! In this workshop, we will explore how to incorporate traditional material (both vocal and instrumental) into your original songwriting. How do you select tunes to mesh with your melodies? How can we tweak their structure, style and rhythm to fit within the context of a song?

The first part of this two part workshop will feature Hannah Baker and Katherine Harrison of Spiteful Foal who will demonstrate their joint approach to songwriting and arranging. We will listen to some of the above mentioned bands and pin down how exactly they make things fit together so well. Then it will be time to listen and workshop as a group. We will brainstorm together and get everyone started on some ideas for their own playing and writing.

The second part of the workshop will be even more hands on as we work to arrange your material into something that is traditionally influenced but uniquely yours. We will look at tools and techniques for choosing tunes and hopefully find one that is a good fit for you.

Though this workshop is somewhat tailored to singer songwriters, instrumentalists, singers, and anyone who enjoys neotraditional music is welcome to attend. Bringing material is not required but encouraged, even if it is just an idea or fragment rather than a full song or tune.
